The Professor asked for a knife and cut the deck of cards about one-half inch down the middle sideways, the tough guy said, “What’s that for?” The Professor replied, “So when you bring them back I want to have them match the half I have here just in case you might try to do something to the.” The Professor didn’t miss a trick he was always wide awake. The tough guy lost $12000 and paid off the next day. That’s when Little Abe left, after he received his commission. The Professor was what we call an all around mechanic. Jack of all Trades, Two handed dice man, dealt cards with both hands, tops at poker, 6 and 7 card rummy (a big game years ago) You name the game he played it. The Professor must have made a million dollars in his day.

Horse Book

Mother time the Professor or Little Abe was hanging around a town between jobs. He was playing horses in a horse book, which up to a few years ago were wide open. This was one of the Professor’s two vices. He would bet pretty high when made a good score. One of the bosses of the horse book liked to play single-handed pinochle and was pretty good at it. Seeing that Abe had a bankroll, he asked Abe if he played.
This boss (who didn’t know who Abe was) put his foot right into the lion’s mouth. Abe said, “I play at it.” For a few days they would play between races, and Abe lost about $1,000 to the boss, who was taking a little edge meaning be wasn’t playing honestly with the Professor.
Of course, this was O.K. with the Professor, who knew what was going on all the time, but he was also one step in front of the boss all the time. Playing Cards

The Professor knew that they buy their cards at the corner drug store, which was two doors away. So the Professor decided it was about time to teach this boss a lesson ‘fl the art of playing pinochle. He went into the drug store and bought 6 decks of pinochle cards, left and came back a couple of minutes later. He told the clerk that he had ‘Dade a mistake, he meant free casino game playing cards not pinochle cards.
The clerk put the 6 decks of pinochle cards back in the box and gave him the playing cards, but the Professor had now switched his own cards which he had some work on the night before, and resealed the decks. The trap was now baited and open.
The Professor walked into the horse book, made a couple of bets, and the boss said, “Well, are you ready for your lesson?” The Professor smiled, “I am always ready to learn, but I have to leave town tomorrow. How about raising the limit. Maybe I can get out before I leave.” The boss said, “Sure, how about $500 a game. You might get out in two games.” He said to one of his clerks, “Herky, get 4 decks of pinochle cards at the drug store.” That’s all the trap was sprung. Now the entire Professor hoped for was that at least 2 of the decks were his. That’s why he put 6 decks in the box in case some were sold. He didn’t miss a trick. All he had left in his pocket was $1,100 and if the first deck opened wasn’t his he was going to quit and try him some other time. Sure enough, the first deck the boss opened was the Professor’s.
